Enjoy the Simple Things

In today’s day and age we lead ever busier lives. We try to fit more into each day, week, month, and year. There is more work that needs to be done, more parties to go to, and more daily commitments that we have to try to fulfill. Our health is steadily decreasing as the level of stress in our lives continues to increase. People rely on anti-depressants and other forms of psychological coping more and more every year. If people were only able to slow down and enjoy the simplicity of life, everyone would be much happier.

Enter the typical office building and you will notice hundreds of employees quickly scurrying around the office while others are hunched over keyboards diligently trying to get all of there work done on time to avoid the wrath of their bosses. This pattern repeats itself day after day for the majority of their lives. The only reprieve people have is the Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday spent consuming large amounts of alcohol in front of the television watching some sporting event or reality television show, trying to forget the previous week and mentally avoid the coming week. There is more to life than the monotonous march through life; it just takes a little searching.

There is a fairly common statement that more people should follow, “On their deathbed, no one ever wishes they spent more time working.” Instead of spending the majority of your life in the perpetual rat race, take some time for yourself. There are occasions that present themselves everyday that can allow you to take a step back and be happy to be alive and enjoy all that you have. Life doesn’t have to be so serious, where a smile or laughter is rarely expressed.

We have created a society where you aren’t allowed to say or do anything without offending someone. The only way someone gets offended is if they allow it. My advice is to smile and ignore the statements of others. You are the only one who gives power to other people’s words. Life is too short to constantly be concerned about the thoughts and ideas of others.

The most important thing to remember is that your job will be there tomorrow, but you may not. You never know when Mother Nature may decide that your time on Earth has come. So take the time to enjoy every second that you are alive, whether it is sitting in a chair looking out the window watching the snowfall admiring the nature’s beauty, when you should be at work. Oh well, the roads were covered in snow and unpassable, or at least that can be your excuse. Sit outside and watch an approaching thunderstorm. Go for a walk with your children or loved one. These peaceful moments where you forget about all the troubles of your daily life can be the most rewarding.

Whenever you feel the stress of your life begin to overwhelm you take a step back and reevaluate everything. Is a deadline at work really worth decreasing you happiness and health? Instead of spending day and night worrying about the status of your project, which doesn’t help anything, do your best and then enjoy your life.

Learning to enjoy the simplicities in life will be the most rewarding accomplishment of your life. The world will seem more peaceful and much more beautiful if you can achieve this. Take some time right now and do something completely spontaneous just for the pure enjoyment of it. I guarantee afterward you will feel mush better. Enjoy!
